The Untouchable

Hanging by your finger tips for dear life at the same time the need to reach the top at all costs, sweating profusely, dipping your fingers in chalk to get some grip. That’s what rock climbing is all about. The aspiration of humans to touch the skies never ceases and never stops to amaze us as to how much we can push the boundaries and ourselves. I started getting ready, gearing up and checking our instruments and cords while staring at the beautiful scenery around us and the mammoth rock that I am going to conquer. Saying a small prayer I head to the base of the rock mountain and start assent. The lower parts are pretty easy and fast we pretty much breeze through them since they have lot of ridges and furrows to grip and keep our feet on. The tricky part comes when u reach half way and most of the rock face is smooth due to rain water flowing over it and smoothening it over the years. And not to mention placing cord holders in cracks in the rock face in case of any mishap. Turning around for a glimpse I saw beautiful scenery of farm lands with mountain ranges as a backdrop. Looking back up I see my destination and move steadily with purpose. Finally with a burst of energy and excitement I reach the top and take a deep breath taking in the atmosphere and scenery around me. Now that’s fun.

Small Wheels

When I was young I used to watch BMX guys riding those small BMX bikes and used to think to myself "why are grown ups still riding cycles my age?". Whats on your house for Christmas Decoration this season?.
But now watching them perform all those wicked stunts in the most common and weird places gives me goose bumps all over. Had to try it out for myself and feel the rush and thrill they go through when they perform. Went to local bike store and ordered a BMX regular bike nothing fancy since I am just learning. The bike arrived home a week later by then I had watched enough BMX videos to write a book about it. Putting my newly gained knowledge to the test I started peddling, was pretty weird at first due to the small radius of the pedals and the movement but I got used to it fast. Going around the block a couple of times till I got the hang of it. Then I thought lets try a wheelie shouldn’t be too hard since it’s so small then I popped the front wheel in the air, and I did a wheelie was very easy. My confidence levels were skyrocketing. With this new confidence I thought lets try a stoppie, which is where you balance the bike on the front wheel alone. Lesson I learnt from it never try a stoppie on a BMX cause it is just stupid, just shift position and lift the whole bike rather than lean forward which ultimately led to me performing a face plant worthy of some awards. But I did manage to do a 1 sec stoppie so it wasn’t all bad.

I watched a lot of action movies and loved the ones where the lead actor would take out an army of bad guys with two pistols, always wished I could do that one day well not an army at least learn how to shoot a pistol. So I looked up the phone book and the internet to find some shooting range near by. Luckily found one in the next town which is two hour drive from where I live but it didn’t matter to me I was too excited to care. Packed up my stuff and went to the range. The instructors comprised of a former police officer and two retired army officers. They first gave me a lecture on the hazards of guns and how they can be misused and how they can misfire and cause damage to us, all this was important information but went right past me, all I could see was the guns on the table. Hands were itching to grab one and try it out. Finally I was given the eye and ear protection and a range of pistols to pick from but the glock was what they recommended I try first. He showed me how to place my hand so I can control recoil. Shot a few rounds then got cocky and when they weren’t looking tried shooting with one hand like in the movies and nearly fractured my wrist. Sprained it but was ok, one hell of a an experience.

Second Home

Not all of the bonds you make here last forever but there are a few that last a life time. The living quarters of dorms are well developed with maintained lavatories. There is one lesson I learnt while trying to learn skateboarding is to NEVER learn from some professional trainer because I never got the hang of it and they keep repeating that,” balance is the key “which we all obviously know. The best thing to do is watch and learn and get better by trial and error. If you choose the path of hiring a professional trainer to teach you and you manage to achieve the impossible and learn something it will be something that millions of kids across the world do, you will not have your own unique style of skateboarding which ultimately is what matters. Unless you make your own style and shred the streets or a half pipe you don’t have what it takes to make it big at the big events like x games. The path of self learning is also not a walk in the park, face plants, bruises; busted skateboards are just some of the byproducts of self learning. But no matter what self learning or professional always wear protection. The satisfaction I got when I landed my first trick jump was awesome. So never give up.

Spice of Life

The first thoughts that come to mind when I think of parties is lots of people, tons of music, dancing, chatting, food and drink. Christmas parties are the best way to celebrate with family and close friends. Christmas party games are really fun when played with your younger and older siblings and friends. The cake is always the best during Christmas and the so is the turkey. A warm and lovely party on the whole without much worries, expenditure or damage. The party I liked the most would have to be the pool parties at my friend’s guest house. Patience Pays

I was eager for the first time I went fishing with my grandfather. Though many said you will hate it and it will be very boring I was excited to go. Finally the day arrived, my grandpa picked me up at me home and we went to huge lake at the outskirts of town. We unloaded the boat and geared up wearing those huge rubber boots and winding up the fishing poles we got into the small boat. We arrived at the spot and let our poles loose but didn’t get any. Then had to wait and in my excitement I forgot to bring anything to spend the time while waiting and since I am very hyper active I started get restless and getting bored. Started thinking to myself may be everyone was right fishing is really boring. Then I felt a small tug on my fishing line I griped the pole tightly in anticipation then it started pulling the line harder. My grandpa told me to lean back but not to break the fishing line. I leaned back using all my strength but it was still pulling me. My heart was racing I used every ounce of strength I had but it eventually pulled me into the water and I lost the line. Grandpa pulled me out of the water but I didn’t care about getting wet it was an amazing experience.

Time Freeze

Have u ever imagined free falling thousands of feet above the ground and watching the world spin around as you float in air? NY!, here i come

Looking out the window of the taxi cab, at all the skyscrapers and crowds of people rushing to reach their destination, I realized that this is New York City, a completely different world then I had ever experienced. Day or night, there are cars honking, people talking, and music playing. Getting out of the cab, walking down Broadway Street for the first time, being part of the city’s madness felt so exhilarating. On every corner the smell of Starbucks would fill my lungs and glowing signs would seem to follow me saying, “Read me.” Though New York is known for all glitz and glamour is also has a notorious side as well so had to watch my back all the time. I stayed at a hotel booked by my travel agency , was a pretty grand hotel with good and kind staff but then again when you have money everyone is nice to you. As the guide too me around explaining the various locations which I did not care for much I was more intrigued in the local people they way they talked and how they ran from cops was all quite an adventure.

Do you miss your childhood ?

As a child I loved adventure. Though one of my adventures made me realize how life really is, and how fast it can be taken away. One of my hobbies as a child was riding my bike around my town. As I went to get my bike from my grandmother’s home, my mother stopped me. The first though I had was why do parents need to be strict and ruin our fun with rules. Of course as a caring parent, she had reminded me to put my helmet on and to tie my shoes. Being the rebel I was, I put the helmet on, but didn’t tie my shoes. It was getting late, and I was tired; I decided to go to my grandmother’s home. As I was turning in a circle, my shoe lace was caught with my bike pedal. I then felt my bike fall over me, making me hit my head hard against the cement. My favorite helmet with girly stickers was now in two pieces. As a child I was amazed, of course frightened of the incident, knowing that one of your most cherished items had saved your head and brains! That’s when I realized “Wow in order for life to be fair, it must hence be unfair?”

After that incident I too, along with my parents, was reminding everyone to be safe. All of my friends saw me as too careful, but I didn’t care because I was not about to let my family or friends, experience what I had to feel.

History in the making

I am the first person of my family to attend University, my parents are so happy that I am attending a University. Nobody in my family has ever stepped foot in a college and I can now say that I am carrying my family’s name over that line by attending University. I traveled all over the country for two years ago and I was determined not to become another Hispanic worker, but a Hispanic that roamed the land for the right reasons and become a better person. I also consider myself as a role model because I just do not want to be the only person in my family to attend college. I want my little sisters who also followed me everywhere to follow in my foot steps and become somebody and do something with their life. Because where we come from there is no opportunity to excel in life, all there is, is just to work and have no future. My goal is to graduate in Biology and enter the dental program. My goal also has some road blocks like in paying for school; it never crossed my mind that school was going to be so expensive. But like it is said I am investing on my future, so when I start my family they could have a better life than the one I was given.

What is Paradise ?

As I look out into the sea, I can taste the salt in the air and watch little rainbows glisten through the ocean’s spray. I feel relaxed as I take in the scenery and think about all the activities that will take place over the next week. It’s always been my dream to honeymoon in Hawaii. And I can see that it will be a dream worth waiting for. When you first step onto the sandy shore, your toes sink into the soft, warm sand. It’s hard to walk at first. You must search out the best location for your stuff. Close enough to the water to get an occasional spray of refreshing, cool water but far enough away so that you don’t get taken in by the tide. In my option, the best thing to do at the beach is go snorkeling. It’s so unnatural, but extremely fun, to be able to breath and see underwater. The sea life that you can get up close and personnel to, are so vibrant and original. There are many species of fish that you can swim along with, and also touch them. This can't happen in our day to day life. We saw a family of endangered sea turtles. They were so big that I could have held on to one of them and let it take me for a ride. It’s so exhilarating that, if you don’t keep watch, you will end up miles from shore.

An Ace Shot

I consider myself lucky because I was taught how to fire a rifle during my summer holidays. The first time I held it, I didn’t expect it to be that heavy but it was carriable. It was a standard assault rifle with a 45mm cartridge and fire rate of 650 rounds/minute. It had 2 modes, the single shot and automatic. For about an hour we were given a lecture on the dangers and how to mount the gun and what to do and what not but all I wanted to was hold that gun and shot some rounds. We finally got our turn. The instructor handed me the gun and showed me how to mount it and how to aim. I was so excited that I was holding a gun; my hands were shaking and waiting to fire a round. Finally the instructor allowed us to fire a test round to get the feel of the recoil and the feel of the shot when fired to make us understand better on how to hold and how to control the recoil. The gun was loaded and I took aim kept it the right position as the instructor said and fired. Well, I forgot to put the ear piece in excitement and so I couldn’t hear much for the next 10 minutes but it didn’t matter to me as i felt I was on the moon.

A high ride

One of my best adventures was when we were camping in good old school days. We were setting up the camp in the woods by a small stream. After all the daily chores such as getting wood for the fire, washing clothes and so on, we were given some free time and of course we being guys with guts, the first thing we do is strip to our underwear and jump into the stream. It was freezing water but we never cared. It was a slow stream with pretty clean water. After a while, I got bored and decided to go upstream but no one agreed to accompany me since all were scared of the instructor but I was curious to see if there was a water fall. So I set off against the current upstream in my underwear since I thought it would be pretty much empty. I went on for a bit then came across a small water fall but it was just water tickling over a small cliff like land mass so I climbed up the face of the cliff and got on top. As always, my luck ran out and I found a bunch of tourists taking pictures and I was standing there wet and in my underwear, I couldn't climb back down since I would slip on the rock so had to run along the path the tourists were coming. Ran all the way back in my underwear to camp, embarrassed. One good thing was that no one in camp knew about what happened back there.

Like a bird

My friend and I figured that the risk of going skydiving is worth the thrill and no matter what happens, you only live once so why waste it. So, we found a reputable place and scheduled our skydiving adventure. This consisted of a three hour lesson, a training video, and a one-on-one personal lesson with a licensed instructor.

Waiting for the day that we were going to jump were the longest two weeks of my life. In these days, we talked about the day we were going to jump, the building anticipation and the risks seemed to be greater than I expected. I soon realized that I should stop worrying and just relax, because I knew that there was no turning back. I couldn't back down and tell my friend that I am not going. My friend just wouldn't accept that answer from me, so I knew I had no choice. When the faithful day came I had no worries, I was ready to jump and sore in the sky like a bird. Getting a bird's eye view was awesome, but the reason I was so relaxed was because I had an instructor right behind me to save me in case I messed up something. But those few moments were the best of my life. Trust me, you too can have those moments. After all, life is only once and you sure should not be wasting it.
